Join us for an enlightening webinar on the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), presented by the Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society. The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is a complex cell-signaling system, first identified in the early 1990s by researchers exploring THC, a compound in cannabis. It plays a crucial role in regulating homeostasis at various levels, including cellular, tissue, organ, and organism-wide processes. The ECS is integral to managing functions and processes such as mood, appetite, memory, sleep, and pain perception. A fundamental understanding of the ECS is essential for anyone prescribing medical cannabis. In this webinar, Dr. Stefan Broselid, Scientific Lead and member of the Executive Committee at the Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society, will provide invaluable insights into the physiology of the body's ECS. He will offer new clinical perspectives on various medical conditions, as well as scientific rationales for the unique opportunities and therapeutic benefits of medical cannabis. Dr. Broselid will also introduce his newly authored paper on the ECS, making this webinar the official launch event for this comprehensive guide, which is designed for members of the Society. By attending, you will gain a deeper understanding of the physiology of the ECS and how medical cannabis exerts its clinical effects. This knowledge will empower you to make informed decisions and contribute effectively in your respective fields. The session is particularly beneficial for healthcare professionals looking to integrate medical cannabis into their practice, for researchers, or for anyone seeking to expand their knowledge in this rapidly evolving field.

Webinar: How to prescribe medical cannabis in the UK

Webinar: How to prescribe medical cannabis in the UK

01/12/2020, Eventbrite

Professor Mike Barnes will join Drug Science to discuss how to become a medical cannabis prescriber in the UK
In this seminar, Professor Barnes will be providing a walkthrough of how to prescribe medical cannabis under the current UK regulations and the future of prescribing in the UK. 2020 has been a turbulent year in which all resemblance of 'normality' has been morphed into the 'new normal'. This has also impacted the way in which prescriptions are made in the UK. Understanding the current landscape is therefore more important than ever. Prof Barnes is a neurologist who worked for many years in MS and brain injury. In 2000 he worked with GW Pharma to develop the first cannabis-based medicine - Sativex. In 2016 he produced the Barnes Report for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Drug Policy Reform which helped eventually to change the law. He then worked with Alfie Dingley's family and obtained the first cannabis license from the Home Office to treat Alfie's epilepsy. Since then he has worked exclusively in cannabis medicine, developed the first cannabis clinic and cannabis teaching programme (the Academy of Medical Cannabis) and now runs a cannabis consultancy (mapletreeconsultants.co.uk) with Hannah Deacon - Alfie's mother and the UK's most prominent campaigner.

Legal but inaccessible: Medical Cannabis for Epilepsy

Legal but inaccessible: Medical Cannabis for Epilepsy

27/05/2021, Zoom

Back in November 2018, history was made when parents of children with Epilepsy finally pushed the UK government to legalise cannabis for medicinal use. Since then, only a handful of prescriptions for medical cannabis have been issued on the NHS, and the parents of children with Epilepsy as well as diagnosed adults have been forced to fork out thousands of pounds to afford private treatment plans. Many patients are having to fundraise continuously to afford to pay for their children's prescriptions. This is all happening whilst we see a drastically low number of doctors nationwide willing to prescribe medical cannabis, due to stigma, lack of legislation, guidance and education. This National Epilepsy Awareness Week, Drug Science will discuss how we got to where we are now – the policy change of 2018 following decades of bad cannabis press resulting from “war on drugs” propaganda. Drug Science will shine a light on the Epilepsy patients and their parents who are still battling the health system to access medical cannabis both privately and on the NHS. We will discuss what options are available to patients and families now, what plans are in the pipeline and how people can help spread awareness of the issues faced by Epilepsy patients and their families in desperate need of medical cannabis treatment. Finally, Drug Science will be discussing why we are faced with a deficit of prescribing doctors, raising awareness of the urgent need for more paediatric neurologists to come forward as prescribers of medical cannabis. Drug Science is committed to giving children with Epilepsy access to reduced price medical cannabis through Project Twenty21, but in order for this to happen we need the doctors to break through the stigma, learn how to prescribe medical cannabis products and to encourage their clinician peers to do the same. Clinical experience with CBD: dried flower and oral extracts

Clinical experience with CBD: dried flower and oral extracts

08/06/2021, Zoom

The approval of epidyolex for the treatment of refractory pediatric epilepsy is providing an increasing body of evidence on the clinical potential of cannabidiol (CBD) to treat different human conditions.

However, clinical research with CBD is generally conducted with much higher oral doses than what it is generally recommended for the symptomatic relief of some debilitating conditions such anxiety, depression, or sleep disorders, based on clinical experience.

Further, inhalation of CBD (e.g. vaporization of CBD-rich cannabis flowers) can be a suitable alternative to oral ingestion and has been found effective to treat several ailments such as anxiety, substance abuse disorders and migraines.

The goal of this webinar is to provide a comprehensive summary of the state of the evidence on the therapeutic potential of these CBD-rich, cannabis-based medicinal products as well as valuable insights from leading experts in the medical field.

A Clinician’s Guide to Cannabidiol (CBD)

A Clinician’s Guide to Cannabidiol (CBD)

21/10/2021, Zoom

Join The Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society and Bud & Tender as we explore what clinicians need to know about CBD. Over the past few years, over the counter Cannabidiol (CBD) products have gained popularity in the UK and across the world. We have seen unprecedented growth in the quantity and range of CBD products available for purchase on the high street and from online retailers. Currently, doctors report receiving mixed messages as to whether these products are legal, safe and effective and clinicians are largely unfamiliar with what patients are using. Given this widespread use of CBD, it is crucial that doctors are confident in understanding the properties of CBD and how it may affect our patients - including therapeutic effects, dosing, side effects and potential drug interactions. This webinar will provide an overview of CBD for clinicians, including Endocannabinoid tone, modes of action and therapeutic effects, pharmacodynamics, different types of CBD oil available in the UK, controlled cannabinoids, Certificates of Analysis (COA’s) and dosing. We also summarise the current legal status of CBD in the UK. It is hoped the webinar and recently updated guide will help doctors understand CBD and help guide their patients to the safest and most effective and evidence-based products available. Chaired by Professor Mike Barnes, Chair of the UK Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society, speakers include Bud & Tender founders Mark Turner and Charles Clowes. Attendee Q&A Attendees are welcome to ask questions to the speakers during our interactive live webinar. The Society is proud to launch a new online educational programme for Clinicians looking to begin prescribing medical cannabis to patients in the UK. It features members of the Expert Committee, PLEA and patient advocates.

This webinar explores the essential need for more education for doctors in the UK, with expert speakers discussing their experiences of prescribing and accessing medical cannabis treatment. The lack of specialists prescribing for childhood epilepsy is leading to significant issues for patients and the key to NHS prescriptions is the wider understanding of the benefits of this medicine by the wider profession.
