CBPMs in Psychiatric Practice: Anxiety, OCD, PTSD & Depression

Categories: Psychiatry

About Course

This online course provides a practical, clinically focused introduction to the use of cannabis-based medicinal products in psychiatric practice.

Written by Dr Luisa Searle, Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical of the Year, the course explores how CBPMs may be considered in patients with anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. It is designed for clinicians who want to better understand the current evidence, clinical risks, patient selection criteria and safe prescribing principles in this complex and evolving area of medicine.

The course takes a balanced and evidence-informed approach. It recognises that many patients are already using cannabis or CBD products to manage symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, intrusive thoughts, nightmares or emotional distress. It also makes clear that CBPMs are not first-line treatments in psychiatric practice and should only be considered where there is clear unmet clinical need, appropriate treatment resistance, careful risk assessment and structured clinical monitoring.

Learners will explore the role of CBD and THC, the relationship between the endocannabinoid system and psychiatric symptoms, and the importance of cautious prescribing in patients with mental health conditions. The course covers key contraindications and cautions, including psychosis vulnerability, mood destabilisation, substance use disorder, suicidality, drug interactions and the risks associated with higher THC exposure.

Through condition-specific teaching and practical case studies, clinicians will gain a clearer understanding of how CBPMs may be used as adjunctive treatment within a broader care plan, while maintaining good governance, documentation, shared care communication and professional accountability. The course content covers core governance principles, patient selection, dosing and titration, side effects, interactions, monitoring and review across anxiety, OCD, PTSD and depression.

Please note, CPD accreditation is pending. You will a certificate on completion with a new certificate issued as soon as certification is confirmed.
